Professional issues for advanced practice: You will explore the contextual aspects surrounding the development of your advanced professional role, while you analyse and debate recent developments relevant to your clinical practice.
Advanced history taking and physical assessment: You will develop your skills and knowledge to obtain a comprehensive patient history, to perform a complete physical assessment of all body systems and to distinguish normal findings from pathological ones. The unit aims to facilitate the development of advanced assessment skills and the ability to accurately describe observations and findings using appropriate terminology.
Advanced health assessment and decision making: This unit will enable you to develop the skills necessary to formulate differential diagnoses and develop action plans in respect of a specific client group/presenting problem. It will develop diagnostic reasoning and critical thinking skills in meeting clients’ health care needs.
Independent and supplementary prescribing: This unit meets the government agenda to extend non-medical prescribing, and will benefit patients by enabling faster access to medication. The curriculum has been devised following the Department of Health guidelines and in collaboration with the NMC. Learning and teaching will take place both at the university and in practice. Lectures will be followed by question and answer sessions and analysis of case examples. OR Principles of disease processes and management of therapeutic interventions: Through this unit you will develop your knowledge and understanding of disease processes. It will enhance your diagnostic and clinical decision-making skills in relation to determining, implementing and evaluating evidence-based therapeutic interventions, of both a pharmacological and non-pharmacological nature.
Advanced practice portfolio: This unit facilitates self-direction and personal responsibility for continuing professional development throughout the duration of the whole programme, and aims to facilitate your attainment of the required competencies, criteria and standards of practice for advanced practice, as well as being tailored towards your own practice arena. This is enabled by parallel progression of the portfolio, alongside all other units of the programme, which build on one another, through production and development of the advanced practice portfolio.
