Presentación

This new course encompasses the ‘artistic’ and the ‘scientific’ to create a new generation of architects who are not only environmentally aware, but able to quantify the environmental and energy impact of their designs.

You will develop your creative environmental design, technical and analytical skills, as well as your critical thinking and awareness of the wider architectural context. This course will give you skills which can be used both in architectural practice and in environmental design consultancy.

Half your time on the course will be spent on studio-based design activities and half on climatic, historical, cultural, socio-economic and professional studies. All modules have a strong interdisciplinary approach that highlights the added value environmental architects bring to the building industry and to society.

The course will be put forward for prescription by the ARB, and validation by the RIBA (Part I). This would mean that on completion of this course you will have completed RIBA Part I.

Programa

Year 1: Sensing the Environment

In the first year you will gain knowledge of environmental principles driving architectural thinking, and learn quantification skills enabling you to conduct environmental and energy performance evaluation of design proposals. You will acquire fundamental skills (technical, design and representation skills) through your personal experience of architectural space.

Typical subject areas covered will include:

Architectural and Environmental Design 1
History of Architecture
Environmental Design and Principles of Building Physics
Year 2: Transformation and Application

You will consolidate and apply the principles and skills acquired in Year 1 to a wider context, moving from the personal space to the remit of the building and its surroundings.

Typical subject areas covered will include:

Environmental Design in Cities
Theories and Histories of Environmental Design
Zero-plus Energy Buildings
Year 3: Stepping out and Making

In your year-long thesis project you will focus on the design, making and testing of a prototype/component, preparing you to step out into practice confident in the use of various environmental design and performance testing methods.

Typical subject areas will include:

Research Brief
Final Thesis Project
Prototype fabrication and testing
Professional Practice
Environmental and Energy Performance
Once this course has been validated, full module details and further information on teaching and assessment will be available via this web page.

Salidas profesionales

This course will give you skills which can be used both in architectural practice and in environmental design consultancy. The research issues explored in your final thesis project could also lead to further research to be pursued in the Department of Architecture’s MArch (Part II) and MSc programmes.
