The study of biochemistry is fundamental to many other areas of contemporary biology, and biochemists are capable of spanning the borders of biology, chemistry and even physics.

This is reflected in our teaching ethos, as our Biochemistry degree programme combines the expertise of the School of Biological Sciences and the School of Chemistry. This gives you the benefit of a flexible programme with a wide range of module and teaching methods. The course begins by providing a foundation in the chemical principles that underlie biochemistry and aspects of cellular and molecular biology.

The wide range of courses offered by both Schools in the second year allows you to tailor your degree programme towards biology or chemistry according to your interests. Specialist courses are also available to deal with current developments in various biochemically-related fields, such as medicinal chemistry, plant or microbial biotechnology and protein engineering.
