Programa

Year 1
The central focus here is on innovation – key to our students’ perspective on music is the importance of original and informed creative thinking. You will engage in a process of creating music for live and recorded environments. Through an exploration of contemporary, experimental, global, interactive and mainstream commercial practices, you’ll develop your musical voice, and increases your knowledge and experience of a range of musical processes. You’ll focus on composition, performance and studio practice, and begin to develop an online presence for your work. You’ll also consider the relationship between innovation in music and contemporary culture.

Year 2
In year 2, you’ll either focus on music practice in the context of the networked world, or develop interactive and audio-visual projects that use music to engage with our visual and digital culture. You’ll also explore contemporary philosophical thought relating to the production and experience of music.

Alternatively, you may wish to further your practice in relation to interactive media and sonic art. This strand focuses on working with packages such as Arduino, Processing and MAX / MSP, where you’ll develop installation and projection-mapping projects, confronting issues such as augmented reality, immersive spaces and other emergent technological themes.

Year 3
Your third and final year consists of a set of interconnected projects that allow you to make the transition into professional practice as a creative musician. You’ll spend time researching and developing these projects, so that you’re able to put something together that’s not only right for you, but that is also commercially and professionally viable. Our students make a range of choices at this stage, including music projects that culminate in an EP and a live performance, as well as authoring interactive music software and hardware, developing installations and composing music for film and games. In addition, a significant number of our students choose to develop music-related projects in the form of websites, live music promotion or educational workshops.

Learning and teaching methods
Creative Sound and Music is a fundamentally practice-based programme, that allows you to build a portfolio of work that is relevant to your future plans as a musician, and at the same time offers you challenging and diverse ideas about developing and establishing your own unique creative voice.
