Presentación

If you are studying two languages together, you will acquire strong language skills, and you can study those subjects through English and through the Welsh, for example Creative Writing. This will deepen your knowledge and give you numerous transferable skills including working with people, critical thinking, problem solving, confidence building and time management. The ability to respond to various situations in Welsh or English will be to your advantage in the competitive work world.

The course is ideal, if you are interested in acquiring practical skills in Welsh. We pride ourselves on our homely atmosphere and our Welsh in the Workplace staff have a good relationship with our students.

BA (Hons) Professional Welsh with English, two-thirds of course contents will focus on Professional Welsh (4 modules per year), with a further third of the course focusing on English (2 modules per year).

Requisitos

Titulo de Bachillerato or the Selectividad with an average mark of 6.
Curso de Orientación Universitaria (COU) with an average mark of 6.

English language qualifications:

GCSE pass in English at Grade C or above
IELTS with an average overall score of 6.0 with at least 5.5 in each component
TOEFL IBT minimum score for Undergraduate of 80 IBT
Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE): exams taken from January 2015 – overall score of 169 with at least 162 in each component ; exams taken before January 2015 – Grade C and no less than borderline in each skill
Trinity College English Language qualifications: ISE II Distinction or ISE III Pass for undergraduate courses
City and Guild’s IESOL/ISESOL tests, in some cases, we may also be able to accept the communicator level (B2)
Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic) with a minimum of 51 points in each element for the majority of undergraduate programmes

Programa

All Professional Studies Major modules are taught in Welsh with modules from your Minor subject taught in English.

Cymraeg Byd Gwaith A looks at how the language is used today in a specific career. You will be able to extend your interests and enhance your communication skills, as well as work experience in the third year. You will also be prepared for the workplace, producing diverse material as CV, covering letter and diary.

Cymraeg Byd Gwaith B extends your professional skills in Welsh. In addition to reading, discussing and analyzing a wide range of professional written texts, students will be writing tasks, where there is an opportunity to develop their creative skills. Students are expected to draw up letters, articles and reports. Students will also expand their knowledge of grammar and vocabulary of the language through a combination of lectures, workshops, seminars and exercises.

In Translation modules cover the history and background of translation in Wales, so that students understand the context. Psychological, social and legal arguments in favour and against translation in Wales today are covered, and students will have the opportunity to weigh these arguments through oral and written tasks. By completing a series of assignments in class, individually and in groups, such as homework and an exam at the end of the year, there will be an opportunity for students to identify good practice in translation.

In the Creative Writing modules, students will discuss different authors sometimes focusing on aspects such as storytelling, portraiture, and describes the basic forms of poetry. Different techniques are used to encourage students to write and produce works independently, and to be critical when considering their own work and analysis work of other authors.

We are very proud of our practical methods of acquiring language skills. You are very lucky because you can study in small groups at the University, creating a homely atmosphere. This means that you get to know your lecturer and the teaching methods are flexible. You will be taught through a combination of lectures, workshops and seminars through the medium of Welsh. We also encourage you to undertake work experience in the third year by following Cymraeg Byd Gwaith A module . The choice of a bilingual workplace is a great way to strengthen your skills in both areas.

You will maximise your chances of getting a job if you take the opportunity to go on work experience by following the Cymraeg Byd Gwaith A module in the third year. You can go to a workplace using Welsh or bilingually to see how to use it professionally, and make connections with employers.

This course provides a solid base to develop written and oral skills in Welsh and English. You may want to be a primary or secondary school teacher (after completing one year of teacher training) or be a language tutor. You might consider a career with press, media, translation companies, journalism or publish books the possibilities are endless with two languages! Learn skills that you can transfer to any job. The increasing demand for professionals who can communicate effectively in Welsh and English, will also serve you well in finding a job.
