The course emphasis is placed on developing your creative, technical and interpersonal skills, commercial flair and business acumen. You can also advance your language skills to meet the increasing standards of global competition. Teaching and learning is interactive, covering academic, practical and applied elements.

Our teaching staff have had successful retail careers and understand the pivotal role of buyers within the decision-making hierarchy.


This course enjoys widespread support throughout the fashion and retail industry, with extensive contribution from industry leaders providing guest lectures, live retail projects and student placements and internships. The course was launched 5 years ago with our first students graduating in 2012 being highly sought after. Graduate buying and fashion management destinations from July this year include: M&S, ASOS, Selfridges, Debenhams, River Island, Surfdome, Ralph Lauren, Snow PR and Original Penguin and Disney.

A fashion buyer is responsible for the profitable development, sourcing and selection of a range of products
that meet the needs and desires of the target customer, by working closely with the merchandising, design and marketing teams.


Year 1 (Credit Level 4)

The first year modules provide a fundamental underpinning of business knowledge and creative skills that will build and deepen throughout the course.

Modules include:

CAD and Illustration
Fashion Trends and Contemporary Culture
Introduction to the Fashion Industry
London Fashion
Fashion Marketing
Product Development and Garment Technology

Year 2 (Credit Level 5)

The second year develops both the practical and academic skills and includes live project work for a fashion brand in collaboration with design students. The expectation is that the additional skills and knowledge gained will enable you to undertake a successful work placement year.

Career Planning
International Retailing
Law for the Fashion Industry
Preparing for the World of Work
Range Planning and Trading
Textiles and Product Realisation
Visual Merchandising

Year 3: Sandwich year

You are given substantial support in finding suitable work placements. The course has excellent industry links and works with many of the major fashion retail businesses. You are ultimately responsible for securing employment but you will be supported throughout the year by your personal tutor. All work placements are subject to an annual University administration fee.

Year 4 (Credit Level 6)

At this level you are expected to develop a more strategic perspective and draw together your academic and work experience. You will study subjects that further develop your general business skills and also have the opportunity to specialise in areas of particular interest.
