Students choosing Healthcare Science (Audiology) will undertake a rigorous educational programme, involving both theoretical and clinical learning, to become an audiologist or hearing aid dispenser. The discipline involves the study of hearing, balance and the pathological conditions that can affect these sensory organs. Students will learn how to assess hearing capacity and balance function and the clinical nature of the course will provide the practical skills needed for employment in the profession. A large part of the work involves the assessment of hearing capacity followed by rehabilitation of impairment. This is largely achieved by fitting, verification and adjustment of hearing aids and then training patients on how to use the hearing aids effectively.
Candidates need to demonstrate a strong educational profile.
GCSE profiles need to include Welsh/English Language, Mathematics and Science all at Grade A-C
Candidates also require a minimum of: BBB at A2 level
At least one A2 level must be in a science subject (Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Mathematics)
Alternative entry requirements
Access: Distinction and Merit profile against the rules of combination. Please note, Access to Science is the only Access course we accept for entry onto this programme (we do not accept Access to Healthcare).
Welsh baccalaureate: Pass and either BB at A2 level (at least one A2 in science) or DD at BTEC
Irish Leaving Certificate: 360

Completion of the course will make you eligible to work within the NHS as an audiologist or the independent sector as a hearing aid dispenser. Within the NHS a career structure exists that permits progress to the very highest level of health professional - Consultant Audiologist.
99% of healthcare science students from Swansea University are employed in graduate level jobs within six months of graduating.
Almost all of the previous graduates of the healthcare sciences have gone on to work in their chosen profession in the NHS, mainly in Wales but also in England. These students typically commence work in Band 5 Practitioner roles. Significant proportions of our graduates now work in Band 6 and Band 7 (specialist) roles.
