Presentación

In addition to the practical aspects of music, this popular music course allows you to explore the cultural and historical aspects of this global phenomenon, so you will develop your knowledge as well as your talent. Although technology is not the focus of the course, you will learn how to work with contemporary studio technology from a creative perspective, which will allow you to develop your musical interests and career prospects.

You will study at the Atrium, at our Cardiff campus: a purpose-built facility that provides a rich creative environment and plenty of chances to gain experience across complementary disciplines. For a broader understanding of industry and the workplace, you may collaborate with your fellow students in performance, composition, recording and research. This approach will bring together expertise from theatre, studio recording, live sound, radio, television, film, journalism, interactive media, design and more.

Requisitos

Titulo de Bachillerato or the Selectividad with an average mark of 6.
Curso de Orientación Universitaria (COU) with an average mark of 6.
Técnico Especialista (Formación Profesional – segundo grado).
Ingeniero Técnico (from Escuela de Ingeniero Técnico).
Diplomado / Diplomatura.
English language qualifications:

GCSE pass in English at Grade C or above
IELTS with an average overall score of 6.0 with at least 5.5 in each component
TOEFL IBT minimum score for Undergraduate of 80 IBT
Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE): exams taken from January 2015 – overall score of 169 with at least 162 in each component ; exams taken before January 2015 – Grade C and no less than borderline in each skill
Trinity College English Language qualifications: ISE II Distinction or ISE III Pass for undergraduate courses
City and Guild’s IESOL/ISESOL tests, in some cases, we may also be able to accept the communicator level (B2)
Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic) with a minimum of 51 points in each element for the majority of undergraduate programmes
Don’t worry if you do not meet these requirements, we run a number of courses to prepare you for academic studies

Programa

As well as practical projects, you will learn about popular music from many perspectives. You will explore the key themes such as performance and improvisation, composition and arranging, theory and analysis, history and cultural studies, music and sound technology, and how the music industry works.

The modules you may study include:

•Theory and Aural Investigation
•Arranging
•Ensemble Studies 1
•The History of Popular Music and the Recording Industry
•Musical Cultures
•Music Technology

In addition to the modules listed above, you will also study ‘Enhancing Academic Success’ which aims to develop and support academic skills and facilitate an effective transition to Higher Education. Areas covered include academic writing, observational skills, critical thinking and analysis.

Learning and teaching methods
The Popular Music course is taught in a variety of ways, including practical workshops in the studio, tutorials, seminars and lectures. You will also develop your practical music skills, building to one or more live ensemble performances during the course.
