Presentación

The BSc Biological Science with deferred choice degree allows a student to defer choosing a particular degree scheme until the end of Level 1. Subject to taking an appropriate combination of Level 1 modules, students are then able to register for one of the more specialised degree schemes: BSc Biology, BSc Zoology or BSc Marine Biology.

Requisitos

A levels: grades ABB-BBB, to include Biology or Human Biology, or equivalent

Welsh Baccalaureate: Pass acceptable as equivalent to an A grade A level

BTEC: DDM plus A level grade B in Biology/Human Biology

Scottish Highers: ABBCC to include Biology grade B

Access to HE (Science): Pass with Distinction (24 Dist to include 3 in Biology, plus 15 Merits)

IB: 33-32 (including 5 in Biology or Human Biology at Higher Level)

IELTS 6.0 (with a minimum of 6.0 in each component) or equivalent English test

We may consider other qualifications if they are Science-based, if they are equivalent to A-levels, and if the content of the qualification includes significant amounts of Biology (i.e., equivalent to A-level Biology).

All applications will be considered on an individual basis, and we will look at the whole application when deciding whether to make an offer of a place, including: the balance, nature and quality of A-level, AS and GCSE subjects (or equivalent); personal statement and referee’s comments.

General Studies and Key Skills qualifications are normally excluded from our offers.

Programa

BIO000 - Foundation Biology
This module will provide the learner with a detailed and holistic overview of life on earth and includes a range of
subject matter including evolution, cell biology, anatomy and physiology, as well as behaviour, ecology and
conservation. The module is supported by two practicals that aim to build core skills required within the field of
biology including identification skills, field based sampling, and numerical skills.
BIO002 - Techniques in Ecology
This course will introduce the basic principles of ecology, incorporating appropriate terminology and techniques
required for field work. The syllabus will enable learners to work safely and be competent with record keeping in
the field. Course participants will be guided on the use of identification keys, and learn some of the key practical
ecology skills needed for further study.
BIO003 - Laboratory Skills
The module will introduce essential practical laboratory skills. The syllabus is split into three main sections
comprising up-to-date training in laboratory safety, basic chemistry and commonly used laboratory procedures.
Training is provided through a combination of e-learning, face-to-face teaching, demonstration and hands-on
participation. Learners will develop the confidence and tools they need to work safely and effectively in a modern
laboratory environment.
BIO004 - Molecular Biology and Biochemistry
The module provides an introduction to the identification and role of essential macromolecules within a cell and
their basic biochemical processes. Students will also gain a theoretical understanding of the basic concepts of
molecular biology of the cell and the practical application of basic molecular techniques. The module will be
delivered through a combination of e-learning, direct teaching, demonstration and practical work.
BIO005 - Dealing with Data
Dealing with data is crucial in all scientific studies. This module contemplates hypothesis formulation and
collection of data for scientific presentation and introduces basic statistics by providing case studies which will
enable developing data handling experience and improving data presentation skills. The learner will develop the
confidence and tools they need to present data in an appropriate form and be able to draw meaningful
conclusions.
BIO006 - Development of Key Skills for Biologists
The aim of this module is to develop key skills, particularly in thinking, communication, organisational, analytical
skills and team-work, as a fundamental grounding for students´ undergraduate studies and subsequently as a
professional scientist. The module is comprised of small-group tutorial workshops
CS-061 - Introduction Programming
This module gives an overview of the main topics and questions in Computer Science and enables students who
are not majoring in computer science to reach a level of skill in programming such that they will be able to apply
their computing knowledge to their other studies.
GEB011 - Environmental Science
GEB011 provides students with a broad understanding of the processes that have shaped the world around
them. The module explores how our solar system was formed before considering the key physical processes that
have shaped the Earth, as well as ecosystems and ´Ecosystems Services´, climate change, evolution and
biogeography.
GEG007 - Fundamental Mathematicals Skills for Natural Scientists
This module introduces students to the basic techniques of pre-calculus mathematics relevant to their particular
degree scheme.
GEG010 - Foundation Geography
This module will build upon topics taught in GEB011 to give students an understanding of landscape evolution
and processes. This module will explore fluvial system evolution, geomorphological processes in extreme
environments, as well as coastal erosion and deposition. Within this module, students will consider the impacts of
these processes on human habitation and converesly, how humans might mitigate against the effects of nature´s
extreme events. The module will also focus on the complex issues surrounding human impacts on the landscape;
including urbanisation, coastal management and waste strategies.
