Presentación

Train to become a teacher in early years with Early Years Teacher Status (EYTS) on a course run in partnership with regional early years settings and schools. Throughout the course you spend time in university and on placements gaining a critical and practical perspective on all aspects of learning and teaching in the 0 – 5 years phase.

What is early childhood education and care with EYTS?
This course leads to an honours degree in early childhood education and care and the professional qualification of Early Years Teacher Status (EYTS). It equips you with the skills and the subject knowledge to work with babies, toddlers, young children and their parents and carers.

Requisitos

Normally five GCSEs at grade C and above including English, mathematics and science. GCSE equivalents* may also be accepted. Plus one of the following
• 260 points from two GCE/VCE A levels or BTEC National Qualifications. We accept AS levels but we do not accept key skills.
• Access- at least 45 credits at Level 3 from a relevant Open College Network accredited course
• 240 points from a CACHE diploma in childcare and education
• Teaching Agency skills test in Literacy and numeracy

You must already hold the GCSE requirements before applying.
You must also successfully complete pre-entry tests in numeracy and literacy as designated by the National College for Teaching and Leadership.

If English is not your first language you must have an IELTS score of 7.0 with a minimum of 6.5 in all skills or equivalent. For equivalents see our English language entry requirements web page.

We consider other qualifications from the UCAS tariff. Applicants with alternative qualifications or a combination of qualifications and work experience are also considered. We welcome applications from people of any age.
Meeting the qualifications and the entry criteria does not guarantee you a place. You should ensure that you submit a personal statement and reference as these are considered as part of the selection process. Guidelines on personal statements and references can be found on the UCAS website.

You must also have evidence of at least 10 days´ experience of working with children in a foundation stage setting gained within 12 months before your application.

As you will work with children, you must complete a declaration of criminal convictions and health check forms. If you already have an undergraduate degree you are not eligible to apply for this course.
* GCSE mathematics and English equivalents are:
• 12 level 2 credits from an Access course
• equivalency test

Salidas profesionales

Previous students have gained roles as early years teachers in private nurseries, preschools and children´s centres.
Early career roles are often practice based but involve some form of leadership such as a room leader, EYT leading practice across a setting or SENCO co-ordinating provision for children with special education needs.
Students have also gained practitioner roles in schools, working with young children aged 2 – 5. Early career salaries start at around £16,000 going up to £24,000.

There are good opportunities for career progression leading to higher level leadership roles. These roles include private nursery manager, nursery chain teacher and children´s centres co-ordinator or manager, where you would lead a multiprofessional team. Salaries range between £25,000 and £40,000.

Some graduates take up teaching roles in further education, with salaries starting at £25,000.

Competencias

During year one, you are introduced to all aspects of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) including child development and the key characteristics of effective learning for children from 0 – 2 years. This includes
• promoting young children´s personal, social and emotional development
• promoting physical development
• promoting language and communication

Key skills you develop include • doing observations • assessing young children´s development • supporting children´s play, health and wellbeing • creating effective learning environments • working with staff teams and families.
You also complete 40 days of placement throughout the year in a registered early years setting working with children aged 0 – 24 months, supported by a trained and experienced work-based mentor.
In year two, you build your knowledge and understanding of the EYFS and focus on child development in children aged 4 – 5 years. You also focus on the needs of children as they move through Key Stage 1 and onto Key Stage 2, examine effective learning strategies for teaching literacy and mathematics, and explore the following themes

• participation and inclusion
• international perspectives on early childhood education and care in early years
• transitions
• working collaboratively as an early years teacher

You complete another 40 days on placement with children aged 2 – 4 years. There may be opportunities for a placement abroad.

During year three, you consolidate your knowledge and understanding of the EYFS, and child development and learning for children 2 - 4 years. You study perspectives on play in early childhood and examine how to work successfully with colleagues across professional boundaries.You gain experience leading practice as an early years teacher and complete a research project in an area of special interest.

You spend 45 days on placement in year three placement with children aged 2 – 4 years.
