Presentación

The HNC Civil Engineering course at Southampton Solent University is a nationally recognised qualification which will prepare you for a higher technician role within the civil engineering sector of the construction industry. The course also provides a platform for further educational and professional qualifications.

In year one you will be introduced to necessary underpinning knowledge and understanding in the fields of numeracy, materials, mechanics, construction technology and health and safety. In year two, you´ll focus on the more specialised areas of surveying, geotechnics and structural analysis and design. Some of these subjects will be supported by significant practical work and field exercises.

Your ´learning by doing´ helps to maintain our high success rate and enhanced career development. You´ll be assessed through work-related assignments and learning activities as well as exams in some subjects.

Requisitos

40 points minimum from either 6-unit or 3-unit awards plus 4 GCSE/O Level grade C or above to include English and Maths
or BTEC/Edexcel Advanced GNVQ
or National Certificate Diploma in a Building/Construction related discipline
or relevant Access course
or other qualifications which are considered to be equivalent of the above.
Applications are welcomed from mature students who may be admitted on the basis of relevant experience rather than standard qualifications.

English language requirements
Applicants who do not have English as their first language will be required to demonstrate an approved level of proficiency in the use of the English language. The agreed minimum requirements for this course are:

IELTS 5.5 (5.0 in writing)
TOEFL IBT 71(19 in writing)
Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic 51 (46 in writing)
or equivalent.
Qualifications are checked before enrolment, and international students must bring their original certificates or certified copies when coming to study at the University.

The University also offers a pre-sessional English programme and an international foundation programme for international students who wish to improve their level of English before starting a degree course.

Teaching, learning and assessment
The course is taught using lectures, tutorials and practical elements, such as laboratory work, surveying exercises and an assessed field visit to the Isle of Wight. There is also group work, designed to provide experience of working in all disciplines within the construction industry.

Work experience
As a part-time student you are generally expected to already be employed within the construction industry.

Study trip
During a day-long assessed field exercise on the Isle of Wight, you will investigate the engineering characteristics of rock and soil, and the scale and type of slope instability encountered in this area.

Assessment
Units are assessed using a combination of assignment work and formal end of year examinations.

HNC Year 1: Tuesdays 9am to 5pm
HNC Year 2: Thursdays 9am to 5pm

Our facilities
The course is supported by two construction specific laboratories and a design studio.
