Year 1 / Level M
Game Development
The aim of this unit is to develop your skills in computer games and computer graphics modelling development. In this unit there is a particular emphasis on the underlying technical theory and software needed for developing computer games and computer game assets and/or content for deployment on today’s real-world entertainment systems.
Intellectual Property in the Digital Economy
You will gain an understanding of the principles of intellectual property law (such as copyright, trade marks, confidentiality and related e-commerce regulation) and how this has become indispensable for professionals aiming for a career in the digital economy. This unit will provide you with a thorough grounding and critical appreciation of legal sources, regulatory environment and strategic impact on business decisions.
Research Methods
You will use key research skills in areas such as literature reviews, critical analysis of research findings, project proposals, planning, experiment design and analysis and dissemination. This unit will adequately prepare you for writing a project proposal and for conducting and disseminating the Masters project.
Individual Masters Project
Using real life problems you will use your knowledge gained from the programme, research findings and industrial experiences to produce an independently conducted piece of work. The project may be linked to the research being undertaken within School of Design , Engineering & Computing research centres.
This project will develop your knowledge of philosophy, methodologies and techniques of research. It will provide an opportunity to critically investigate and report on a particular issue in depth. This project will enable you to engage in complex issues and present an analytically rigorous and well argued case.
Advanced Games Programming
To produce professionals with knowledge and skills in computer graphics and games programming with a particular emphasis on the underlying technical theory and programming paradigms needed for developing computer game programs.
Mathematics for Games
The aim of this unit is to produce professionals with knowledge and skills in mathematics for computer games, the unit will place particular emphasis on the fundamental mathematics required to underpin computer graphics and game physics.
Game Physics and AI
Introduce the concepts and techniques required to incorporate physical behaviour in game entities and to endow those entities with artificial intelligence capabilities to achieve realistic and challenging game play. Commencing with a review of the fundamentals of physics and AI, the unit will then develop the necessary coding techniques to enable inclusion of physics and AI in a range of game genres.
