Presentación

There’s a strong emphasis on learning through ‘hands-on’ practice, using our professional standard facilities, and preparing students for the new world of multi-platform journalism; much of your assessed course-work will be ‘real’ journalism assignments.

As well as regular classes taught by experienced journalists on our staff, we also invite other media professionals as guest speakers or to critique student work.

There’s also a slot for work placements, usually in January. The course is taught over two semesters, followed by the largely self-directed final project. Unlike most journalism MAs you can undertake a practical Final Project: a Radio Documentary, Print Portfolio or an Online project. Some students choose to write a 15,000-word dissertation instead.

Alongside your journalism classes, you will also be able to take twice weekly Tee-Line shorthand classes. These prepare you for achieving a score of a hundred words per minute in the National Council for the Training of Journalists shorthand exam.

Requisitos

You should hold a good first degree equivalent to a UK Upper Second Class Honours. Ideally you should have some journalism work experience, whether a short placement or more extensive professional experience. You will also need a good understanding of the media and current affairs. Unless a large part of your education has been in English, you will need an IELTS score (or its equivalent) of 7.0 in speaking and in writing.

Applicants should submit two short assignments with their application; the first should explain why you have decided on a career in journalism (250 words maximum), and the second should be either an analysis of the print, online or broadcast media in your home country, or an analysis of how a recent news story was covered in different media (300 words maximum).

Objetivos

If you are planning a career in journalism, this course will equip you with the practical and intellectual skills necessary to succeed in either print and/or online media, or in broadcast journalism. The course has a practical focus. You are expected to develop story ideas and contacts, and gather your own material for journalistic course work. You will be given full training in using our up-to-date media resources, newsrooms and studios, ensuring that you graduate from the course as a multiskilled journalist.

Our teaching staff are highly experienced journalism professionals. As well as being a Skillset Media Academy (www.skillset.org), the broadcast pathway of the course is accredited by the Broadcast Journalism Training Council (www.bjtc.info). Our graduates go on to work with a variety of leading media organisations including Conde Nast, ITN, BBC radio and TV, The Financial Times and The Guardian. We have twice been acknowledged with the BJTC award for excellence in teaching, and many of our students have won journalism awards.

Although designed to prepare you for a career in journalism, this course could also lead to a career in public relations, communications, or any other profession requiring effective communication and practical skills. In recent years MA students have been able to go as ‘embedded journalists’ on Royal Navy and NATO training exercises, sometimes on board ship, as well as visits on exchange to Moscow State University’s Faculty of Journalism, and to the European Commission and Parliament in Brussels.

Our journalism graduates are now working at Al Jazeera, Associated Press, BB C Arabic and Persian TV, BB C Radio Five Live, BB C Radio Four, BB C Three Counties Radio, BB C World Service, Central China Television, Indian news channels NDTV, UTV and CNN-IBN, LBC Radio, Reuters, Sky News, Sky Sports, The Economist website, The Guardian, The Washington Post, and many other news organisations around the world.
