Presentación

This course is designed to give you an insight into aspects of the drug discovery and development process, by looking at a number of disease areas including cardiovascular, neuro, arthritic and respiratory pathologies. It will give you the opportunity to study the principles of pharmacology, bioinformatics and toxicology for the development of novel therapeutics for their management.

Requisitos

You must possess at least a BSc Honours degree in physiology, pharmacology, biomedical sciences or in a closely related subject. Alternatively, you will need an equivalent qualification or experience in physiology and pharmacology or biomedical sciences deemed suitable by the course team. If your first language is not English you should have an IELTS score of at least 6.5, with 6.0 in each element. During the induction stage of the course, if you do not have English as your first language, you will need to complete Academic English screening and any resulting recommended Academic English support activity.

Programa

Core modules

BIOINFORMATICS IN MEDICINE
The module examines how computers assist in making sense of data-rich areas of biology - including genomics and proteomics - and how this impacts on medical care and medical research.

PHARMACOLOGY AND DRUG DISCOVERY
You will explore the role that pharmacology plays in the development of drugs from bench to bedside, examining the need for improving pharmacotherapy for existing and emerging diseases and the role that pharmacoeconomics plays in the drug discovery process.

DRUG METABOLISM AND TOXICOLOGY
This module provides a sound understanding of toxicokinetics and reviews the molecular mechanisms underpinning toxic side effects. You will explore the role of major metabolic pathways in the variation of an individual’s drug response, and the protocols for toxicity testing.

MOLECULAR BIOINFORMATICS
Bioinformatics is at the interface of computer science, informatics and biology. This module shows how it can be used to successfully answer questions that lie at the heart of modern biology and medicine by providing a comprehensive overview of the discipline.

PROJECT A: CRITICAL REVIEW AND DESIGN STUDY
You will be able to develop your skills in information retrieval, critical analysis and presentation relevant to your research topic, and form a clear plan for your project.

PROJECT B: PROJECT AND REPORT
This module aims to enhance your skills of self-management, experimental design, critical analysis and interpretation of data, enabling you to present and justify your research.

Option modules

Choose two from:

ANTIMICROBIAL CHEMOTHERAPY
You will develop the skills needed to analyse critically the characteristics of microbes, humans and antimicrobial drugs, and the interactions between them that influence the strategies employed in the chemotherapy of infectious diseases.

BIOTECHNOLOGY AND BUSINESS
You will gain an insight into the scope of commercial biotechnology, starting and financing a company, the role of Intellectual property protection, writing a business plan, assessing projects, managing a company, managing company finances, and coping with industrial safety legislation.

COMMUNICATING SCIENCE
Introducing you to key concepts in science communication, its challenges, rewards and applications, this module is designed to incorporate scenarios related to your interests, such as health, drug discovery and water science. The roles of science and scientists in society and how the public perceives, interacts with and responds to the information produced by scientists are explored, with the history of communicating science used to contextualise current issues in disseminating information.

IMMUNOPHARMACOLOGY
The modules examines the pathological basis of inflammatory and immune disease states. It will explore in depth the pharmacology of drugs acting on the immune system and the identification of novel therapeutic targets for their treatments.

MOLECULAR THERAPEUTICS

NEUROPHARMACOLOGY

Salidas profesionales

The course is aimed at those aspiring to be researchers within university research laboratories or in the pharmaceutical industry. During the course you will develop a range of transferable skills that will enhance your prospects for employment and research opportunities in the UK and overseas.
