Developing and Selling Ideas
This unit will help you develop your ideas as viable projects. Students will learn how to achieve a balance between creative and business imperatives in devising and selling a specific film or television programme. We look at how to generate ideas, how to write proposals, how to create treatments and how to pitch to commissioning editors and investors. Students identify a particular project which they research and develop during the course of the unit to equip them with the entrepreneurial competencies required to sell in a highly competitive marketplace.
This unit establishes a social, cultural and intellectual context for production work on the course. In combination with the other practical and professional provision provided, the unit offers a strong critical foundation for the effective realisation of production work. Teaching enables students to engage collectively with narrative theory in a critical and analytical forum.
This unit aims to enable the students to synthesise the critical, conceptual, managerial and professional skills and understandings required for managing production artefacts as a producer, production manager, location manager and first assistant director. Students on the course work alongside MA Directing Digital Film and Television students to plan and produce projects following prescribed production management processes. There is also an opportunity to undertake paid production management work with real corporate clients through the university’s own production company.
The media industry is constantly changing! This unit aims to ensure students graduate with a set of skills to enable them to prosper and succeed in the industry. Students study the current debates and trends in the industry in relation to cross-platform commissioning and production. Students will evaluate a range of theoretical and practical tools by applying them to brands that can be explored and exploited across different media platforms. Students will be working alongside their peers on other media production courses with skills in directing, radio production, interactive media, writing for the media and post-production editing.
