Professional Role (Health Visiting)
This unit aims to develop critical insight into the complex specialist role of the SCPHN HV practitioner. Working in a practice setting you will be able to develop and demonstrate the NMC proficiencies to assess, plan, deliver and evaluate evidence based public health strategies with individuals, groups and communities. Safeguarding issues are addressed within the unit, enabling you to prevent, identify and minimise the risk of abuse of vulnerable individuals. You will develop the skills to critically appraise relevant evidence and consider its application to practice. The unit faciltiates the achievement of the V100 prescribing requirements (NMC 2007).
Context & Scope of Public Health
You will be introduced to the context and scope of the current public health agenda. This is a core unit that will build upon your previous experience and knowledge of public health practice and strategy, forming a foundation for the study of further units.
Principles of Enquiry and Evidence Based Practice in Health & Social Care
This unit is a core to all Masters level degrees as it serves as a foundation for a range of more advanced units in research methodology. Supported by generic theoretical learning materials, it allows you to consider enquiry in relation to your discipline, specific practice experience and explore both problems in the practice setting and areas for further learning.
Public Health Leadership & Management (Health Visiting)
This unit aims to enable your development of a critical insight into the strategic leadership and ethical management roles of the SCPHN HV practitioner. You will develop the skills that allow you to critically evaluate available evidence to underpin public health practice. This will provide you with the ability to challenge and address gaps in the contemporary literature, apply risk assessment and management strategies, critically evaluate the quality of service provision and governance issues and demonstrate the ethical management of self, people and resources. Achievement of the NMC (2004) proficiencies for Part 3 registration will be assessed within this unit.
Public Health Management Strategies
This unit will enable you to explore the ways in which public health strategy is implemented in the contexts covered in the ‘Context and Scope of Public Health’ unit. It aims to enable you to critically evaluate public health strategies and interventions nationally, and to place this within an international context. You will be enabled, through critical evaluation, to begin to formulate strategies and solutions to public health issues.
Health Promotion & Partnership Working
This unit will enable you to draw upon, and constructively critique the various bodies of knowledge, which can contribute to health promotion. Additionally, it will help you to work collaboratively with professionals in a number of sectors. The concept is to consider the scope of public health practice, in relation to working in partnership with residents/users as well as with other agencies.
